MetricTest offers Advantest’s U3741 3 GHz Portable Spectrum Analyzer

HAYWARD, CA (November 22, 2006) - Today MetricTest announced the availability of Advantest’s new low-cost portable spectrum
analyzer, the U3741. The U3741 Spectrum Analyzer is manufactured by Advantest Corporation in Japan and sold and serviced in
North America by MetricTest in California’s Silicon Valley.
The U3741 is suitable for electromagnetic environment analysis and other field applications, as well as wireless communications
device and module production lines. David Sherve, MetricTest vice president of product management said, "The new low cost spectrum
analyzer is smaller and lighter than any model in this category. The U3741 can be operated on battery power and have a warm-up
time of less than five minutes. This makes the U3741 ideal for portable applications at higher frequencies."
Wireless LAN networks, cellular telephones, contactless smart cards, terrestrial digital broadcasts - all of them have become a
part of our daily lives, and all of them use high-frequency wireless technology. Diversifying applications and expanding demand for
communications devices have exacerbated competition in the market, placing manufacturers under pressure to reduce manufacturing costs.
Makers of test and measurement equipment can support increased cost-efficiency by offering faster performance evaluations, thus
reducing cost of test and equipment costs. Additionally, demand from device manufacturers has driven a trend for measuring
instruments to grow smaller and lighter, so that they may be transported outside the factory, to any location where maintenance
and testing work needs to be done.
Advantest’s new U3741 joins the three other models in the company’s U3700 series (the 8 GHz, 31.8 GHz, and 43 GHz spectrum
analyzers). Measuring frequencies in the 9kHz to 3GHz band, it performs at twice the speed of the previous model (the R3131A),
and offers a higher level of overall accuracy: ±0.8dB at 1GHz, as opposed to ±1.5dB. It can also measure transmission power - a
function essential to wireless device performance evaluation - rapidly and with a high degree of accuracy, thus contributing
significantly to production line efficiency. The product boasts a compact body (1/2 the size of the R3131A) - a design
characteristic it shares with the other models in the U3700 series - and a removable external battery that allows for two hours
of continuous operation. Its standard configuration includes every interface currently in use. Additionally, an option permitting
impedance entry at 75Ù makes the U3741 an optimal tool for electromagnetic environment analyses, including terrestrial digital TV
reception problems.
Although this low cost, general-use spectrum analyzer scores higher on every performance criterion than its predecessor, the
widely adopted R3131A, Advantest is offering it at an almost identical price - a position certain to be appreciated by manufacturers
seeking to reduce equipment costs.
